Is it normal for a new internal hard drive to have cosmetic defects?
I ordered an internal 3.5" Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB drive from NewEgg and it arrived with some cosmetic defects. The silver metal has some minor scratches/scuffs, and one of the small black pole-like or rivet-like things has a tiny chip off of it. (The thing in the extreme top-left part of this stock photo, above the medium-size black circle: http://hothardware.com/newsimages/Item8567/wd20eads-2tb-hd-label.jpg )
I don't actually care that much about the cosmetic defects themselves, but they make me wonder if this is a drive that's been returned before or refurbished. So is it normal for new drives to have this sort of thing, or is something possibly sketchy with this drive?

It might be refurbished. The seller has to disclose that when selling (Newegg). Sometimes the manufacturers refurbish drives and re-package them as new, but then, someone has to be told they are refurbished !!
